Al's just back from the Aprilia Shiver launch, and here's his thoughts on the final production-ready version."The Italians seemed quite fond of the pre-production version of this new naked bike when they rode it a few weeks ago. And having spent a day on the wee beastie on the mountain roads north of Treviso, I'm pretty impressed too. It's the first time Aprilia has built its own big bike engine in-house (the RSV was developed with Rotax), and it's a fairly high-tech lump, with fly-by-wire fuel injection (based on a Volkswagen Passat apparently) and a well-specced chassis, including USD forks, radial brakes and a sweet little composite frame. Looks good too.
"The engine is pretty strong up top, with a fantastic noise and a hard punch over 6krpm. It's a little wooly down low though - engineers have apparently deliberately softened off the power off idle, and there's a vagueness about the bottom end that is a little perplexing. It's certainly not the hard-edged wheelie monster some hoped for. Expect a future, more aggressive version of this engine soon though - this first bike is aimed at the more mainstream naked middleweight market.
"The chassis is well up to dealing with the engine. It steers beautifully, and although the suspension feels a little basic and underdamped at a standstill, once you're moving on the road, there's little to complain about.
"Equipment levels are high, particularly the smart LCD dashboard which has more functions than a 1980s scientific calculator. The design has a high quality feel too, which is lacking on some competitors.
"The Shiver is expected in shops next month, and will hopefully be priced to sell at around £5,500. Full UK test to come soon..."

Also kurz übersetzt: Der Motor hat eine phantastische Stimme und einen harten Schlag über 6000 u-min. Das Fahr ist wunderbar und es gibt wenig auszusetzen.
